Getting Started with Amazon FBA: A Beginner's Guide

Published June 18, 2024 · 9 min read · PrepKingz

Amazon FBA — Fulfillment by Amazon — lets you sell products on the world's largest marketplace while Amazon handles storage, picking, packing, and shipping to customers. For entrepreneurs in Canada and the US, FBA provides access to Prime customers and the credibility of Amazon's logistics network. But the model only works if you understand the full workflow from supplier to customer.

Step one is setting up your Seller Central account. Choose between an Individual plan (per-item fee, no monthly cost) and a Professional plan ($39.99/month CAD, required for most serious sellers). Complete identity verification, add your bank account, and configure tax settings for your province or state. If you plan to sell in both Canada and the US, register for both marketplaces early.

Product selection is where most beginners spend the most time — and for good reason. Use tools like Helium 10, Jungle Scout, or manual research to find products with healthy demand, manageable competition, and margins above 25% after all fees. Avoid restricted categories, oversized items, and products with complex compliance requirements until you have experience.

Once you have a product, create your listing in Seller Central with optimized titles, bullet points, and images. Generate your FNSKU labels, then send inventory to a prep center or prep yourself according to Amazon's requirements. Your prep partner will label, package, and create inbound shipments to Amazon fulfillment centers.

After your inventory is received and active, focus on launch strategy: competitive pricing, PPC campaigns, and requesting reviews through Amazon's compliant programs. Monitor your inventory levels and reorder before stockouts. As you scale, outsourcing prep to a professional 3PL frees your time for the growth activities that matter most.
